Wildcat Student-Athletes Earn Degrees

in K-State Updates by Eric Holderness on May 19th, 2010

Kansas State University held its spring commencement exercises on Saturday and among those receiving degrees were 62 current or former Wildcat student-athletes.

Highlighting the 62 who graduated on the weekend were 20 members of the K-State equestrian team, 12 from the football team, 10 men’s and women’s track and field athletes, six rowers, four members of the men’s and women’s golf teams, three each from baseball and men’s basketball and two each from volleyball and women’s basketball.

"One of the top priorities and goals of having a model intercollegiate athletics program is to provide our student-athletes with a world-class experience and the opportunity to earn their degree," said Jill Shields, Associate Athletics Director for Student Services. "These individuals have displayed a tremendous amount of commitment and determination during their time at K-State and they are to be commended for this accomplishment."

K-State continues to rank among the league’s best in terms of academic success as it currently leads the Big 12 Conference in graduation rate with a four-class average of 67-percent, while the football and men’s basketball programs also are currently No. 1 in the league at 66-percent and 75-percent, respectively, in the same category.

The athletics department, which has led the Big 12 Conference in overall graduation rate in each of the past three seasons, had another outstanding academic year in 2009-10.

Five student-athletes were named Academic All-Americans, including first team honors by Scott Sellers, while five others were selected to the Academic All-District VII team. In all, 58 student-athletes were named to Academic All-Big 12 squads, while a combined 419 student-athletes were named to the Spring 2009 and Fall 2010 Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
